The Ruins Movie Review
Wow i was sorely disappointed with this movie. I had heard a lot of positive reviews of this. While a lot of horror movies have decent gore and kills but the character are lacking, I thought this movie had the opposite problem. I thought the characters were well written and I actually liked all of the main ones. It even had cool locations and a mayan temple set piece. So what the fuck went wrong? I just didnt find it scary or interesting. This is a minor spoiler cuz you find out pretty quick but the villain of the movie is fucking plants. Once I found this out and I stopped rolling my eyes I was hoping there would be something cool or quirky that ive never seen before. But alas it was cliche zone and just boring.
The movie is about a group of 4 American teens that go on vacation to Mexico. At the hotel they meet up with a German guy and his friends that ask them to join them on a trip to a Mayan temple thats not on any map. The German’s brother went to the temple several days before but hasnt returned or contacted back. Once they arrive at the temple they are surrounded by several local villagers. They are harassed and finally one of the Germans is shot in the head. The others scared for their lives run to the top of the temple where they find tents and other campground stuff set up. The whole ruins finally gets surrounded by the villagers and they start to pray and block any hope of the kids leaving without fear of death. At the top of the ruins there is a hole that leads down to where they can hear the sound of the German brother’s cellphone.
Without spoiling too much as they go down into the pit a few of them get injured and have to be brought back topside. While topside the plants start to work their way into their wounds and body. There is one cool gore scene involving cutting someones legs off but other than that the movie falls flat. There is no true suspense nor scares.
The bottom line is the movie had so much potential but the horror wasnt executed well. It is based off of a popular novel which Im sure has mad potential but it just doesnt translate well on screen. Other than having a great production and characters I liked it still ends up striking out. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a “ringing plants” 6.1 out of 10.
