Backyard (2009) Movie Review
Directed by Carlos Carrera

This is the 3rd movie about the murders and disappearances of hundreds to thousands of Mexican women along the border near and around Ciudad Juarez (the Mexican side of El Paso). Just by the body count alone, you have one of the most notorious serial killers in the history of the continent. Despite having an experienced and solid director, good camerawork, and worthy actors; the film becomes a paint-by-numbers crime thriller that offers more history than tension. Despite its complex and harrowing material, Backyard just doesn’t intrigue or wow you like it should, and then leaves you with a limping ending that shows no one seems to have any answers. It doesn’t help that I saw this after watching The Red Riding Trilogy: 1983, which is a great film and one of the best of 2010.
